How to fit a cinch / girth on your horse
How do I know if it fits?
Measuring your horse for a cinch is a cinch!
The cinch/girth needs to sit in the armpit of the horse with the buckle high enough that when it brings it’s front leg back the elbow doesn’t hit the buckle.
It also shouldn’t sit too high that is sits on the ribs. This will cause the cinch to press on the ribs and in extreme circumstances could even break a rib. I think your horse would get a little upset before that happens.
In horses around the 14 - 15 hh mark there is usually a window of 4 inches in which the cinch can fit. This is not a rule of thumb and for ponies that window is smaller.
There is a little video I posted on Facebook some time ago that may help too, the link is below
